Ayele Adola, a seasoned smallholder and father of 11, tends his 10-hectare farm in the sacred Harruu community of Garbicho Roggicha, Guji, Ethiopia. As chairman of the local coffee union, he upholds centuries-old traditions where villagers live in harmony, revering coffee production as a profound legacy.
From his plot at 2,100 meters, Ayele harvests around 30 tons of cherries yearly, processing this lot entirely on-site using time-honored natural methods. Ripe cherries dry on raised African beds for 25-30 days, then rest in shaded storage to homogenize before dry-milling, yielding balanced layered coffees.
Beyond farming, Ayele supports neighbors by purchasing their cherries, fostering communal bonds in this tight-knit, ritual-rich enclave. A testament to family, heritage, and sustainable stewardship.
