Yunguilla is a small, high-altitude community in the Saraguro region of Loja, southern Ecuador. In recent years, the area has gained recognition for producing some of the country’s most refined coffees, driven by a growing focus on careful picking and controlled post-harvest practices.
Producers here typically work small plots at elevations between 1,800 and 2,100 metres, cultivating varieties such as Typica Mejorado. Harvesting is highly selective, with cherries processed using precise fermentation and drying techniques. Naturals from the region are often handled with particular care, resulting in expressive yet clean profiles that emphasise clarity over overt fermentation.
The development of coffee quality in Yunguilla has been shaped in part by the influence of leading Ecuadorian producers, bringing a more structured and deliberate approach to processing. The result is a style that feels both vibrant and composed, with layered fruit character and a polished finish.
